September Spotlight

MARISOL LEYVA

Director of human resources & risk Management
Village of bensenville

Tell us about your journey into the profession:

My journey into the public sector has been both unconventional and deeply fulfilling. My career began in private sector marketing and communications, which provided a solid foundation in business and relationship building. From there, I moved into business development and higher education recruitment, where I honed my skills in forging strategic partnerships and attracting talent.

My subsequent role in human resources for Michelin-starred restaurants further refined my expertise in talent management and organizational culture. Hospitality is incredibly demanding, and in search of a better work-life balance, I discovered my current role with the Village of Bensenville.

My diverse background has been a tremendous asset in my current position, offering a different perspective and a well-rounded skill set that enriches my approach to public sector challenges.

Why is local government a good career path?

At its core, working in local government allows you to serve a community and make a tangible difference in people’s lives. For me, it’s about being a service provider to the employees who directly support and enhance the lives of residents.

The work environment is often filled with dedicated, community-oriented individuals who are passionate about making a positive impact, which fosters a collaborative and supportive atmosphere.

Local government is known for its stability, work-life balance and sustainable employment opportunities, which are crucial in today’s job market.

Fun fact about yourself:

My husband and I were featured on an episode of DIY Network’s Yard Crashers! The show completely renovated our backyard, turning it into an amazing outdoor space. It was a fun experience!

If you could give one piece of advice to future local government leaders, what would it be?

Seek discomfort! Always seek out opportunities that push you beyond your comfort zone. By placing yourself in challenging situations, you can leverage your current strengths while expanding your capabilities. Once you’ve mastered one area, move on to the next challenge to continue evolving.

Additionally, actively network and engage with professional organizations. These connections will provide support, inspiration, and valuable insights as you navigate your career.

  • Obsessed with Chappelle Roan at the moment! Playing Pink Pony Club on repeat!
  • Reading Solito by Javier Zamora and,
  • DEI Deconstructed by Lily Zheng – we have a lot of this work yet to be done in public sector.

Hobbies:
  • Brunch! If brunch was an Olympic sport, I would be in Paris right now.
  • Exploring the world through travel with my family & friends
  • Professional, lifelong fan to my sons at their sporting events.
