BRIANNA BACIGALUPO
MANAGEMENT ANALYST, CITY OF ST. CHARLES
Tell us about your journey into the profession:
I’ve always had an interest in government and policy, but I wasn’t sure what my next steps would be after college. I ultimately landed a position as a legislative staff intern at the Capitol in Springfield focusing on policy and budget work. While it was an incredibly valuable experience, I found myself yearning for a position that would allow me to have a greater impact on people and communities—thus sparking my interest in local government. I soon enrolled in the MPA program at NIU and was fortunate to get an internship with my hometown, Elk Grove Village. In my time as an intern, I became immersed in all things local government—I learned all about the budget process, the importance of TIFs, and most importantly, I had the opportunity to learn from mentors in the profession. My internship paved the way for the various positions I’ve held in Elk Grove, Carol Stream, and my current role with the City of St. Charles.
Why is local government a good career path?
I love working in local government because there’s an endless supply of work that is meaningful and rewarding. From organizing vaccine clinics, to analyzing potential development opportunities and making services more accessible to residents and businesses, we have an opportunity to make a direct impact on people’s lives. I take pride in knowing that I have made a positive difference in each community I’ve worked for.
Fun fact about yourself:
I taught myself to sew during the pandemic and now it has become one of my favorite hobbies. There is something really special and unique about being able to turn sheets of fabric into actual wearable pieces of clothing and it’s been rewarding to see my skills improve over time.
If you could give one piece of advice to future local government leaders, what would it be?
Challenge yourself. Whether it’s speaking up at that meeting, proposing a process improvement, or applying to that position that peaks your interest, seek out opportunities to get out of your comfort zone, because you never know what they will lead to.
Shows/music/books you’re currently watching/listening to/reading:
Chappel Roan and Charli XCX have been my soundtrack for the summer (and are still on repeat)! Two podcasts I listen to regularly are Career Contessa and Just B with Bethenny Frankel. I recently finished reading I Heard you Paint Houses by Charles Brandt, the book that inspired the movie The Irishman; it was a dark but fascinating read based on true events.
Hobbies:
Bike riding, kayaking, reading, collecting vinyl records.
