La Grange, IL (pop. 16,321). The Village of La Grange is seeking a highly skilled, collaborative, strategic, and forward-thinking public works professional to join their dedicated leadership team. As the next Director in this desirable community, you will be assisting elected officials in prioritizing capital projects and contributing towards the formulation of sound, and sustainable, financing practices to support their construction and maintenance. In FY2025, the department oversees a $1.9M General Fund budget and a $8.2M infrastructure program. The Director has three direct reports, including the Assistant Director, Executive Assistant, and part-time Clerk; there are 23.5 FTEs in the department. The next Public Works Director will have a unique opportunity to shape and execute an extensive long-range capital improvement program including $121M in identified road, sewer, water, and street improvements, as well as lead water service line replacement program. The Public Works Director is appointed by the Village Board, reports directly to the Village Manager, and actively contributes to the Village’s Management Team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as the Village’s expert on public works matters, advising the administration on capital improvement strategies and long-term infrastructure planning.
- Offer dedicated, aspirational leadership and use both interpersonal skills and a strong command of public works knowledge to support departmental decision-making.
- Prepare, present, and manage the annual budget for the Public Works Department, ensuring responsible fiscal management, adherence to Village procurement policies, and targeted investments aimed at improving service delivery.
- Develop a succession plan and support the development of individuals in filling higher level positions within the department.
- Implement technologies to increase efficiency and productivity and further the quality of services provided. Leverage a robust GIS program to assist in asset management and other efforts of the department.
Qualifications:
- Must possess a minimum of five years of management-level public works experience, ideally overseeing a diverse range of programs and services.
- A bachelor’s degree in engineering, public administration, or related field is a plus, but significant relevant experience will be considered. A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Must possess a valid Illinois Driver’s License or ability to obtain one. A CDL license is preferred.
The anticipated starting salary range is $155,000-$160,000 +/- DOQ. The full salary range is $134,575-$162,876. Residency is not required.
