Village of Lake Zurich, Finance Director

The Village of Lake Zurich, Illinois (19,759) is currently accepting applications for our next Finance Director. Finance functions include budgeting, employee payroll, accounts payable, utility billing, accounting, and Village Hall reception. The Department takes a lead in creating the annual Village budget and ACFR as well as managing the Village’s four TIF Districts and promoting long-term fiscal sustainability. Finance consists of 7 FTE’s.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan, organize, coordinate, supervise, and lead assigned staff in the daily operations of various finance activities including, but not limited to, accounting, payroll, utility billing, cash receipts, and customer service.
  • Develop and implement Village wide financial policies and procedures.
  • Performs audit responsibilities including preparation of work papers; monitors fixed asset accounting procedures.
  • Oversee payroll processing including review and approval, perform back-up responsibilities, prepare journal entries, and approves W-2’s.
  • Maintain and manage the General Ledger by reviewing and reconciling accounts and creating journal entries to ensure accuracy.
  • Resolve banking issues related to assigned finance functions.
  • Prepare year-end entries, reconciliations, and reports, and collaborate with external auditors during financial reviews.
  • Investigate and resolve financial issues, complaints, and inquiries from Village departments and the community, responding promptly to service requests.
  • Provide staff with tactical and strategic direction.
  • Establish work priorities, develop schedules, provide training, conduct performance evaluations, and manage employee recognition and disciplinary actions as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in finance, accounting, public management or related field.
  • Eight or more years progressively responsible related experience in governmental accounting.
  • Five or more years supervisory experience, or any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • CPA beneficial but not required.

  • Creative and Collaborative: We are not advocating for creative accounting, but the ability to recognize and adjust to dynamic revenue streams. The Finance Department partners with every Village department to generate ideas and implement financial strategies.
  • Communications Guru: Analysis is essential, and numbers don’t lie, but not everyone speaks Excel spreadsheet. An effective Finance Director translates dollars and cents into operations and resource effects.  A great Finance Director can illustrate changes and impacts in relevant ways to elected officials and department teams.
  • Sees the Big Picture: A productive Finance Director gets out of their office and learns about each department and function to guide future directives. Rather than merely reporting monetary results.
  • High Sense of Ethics and Integrity: Our next Finance Director will need a deep commitment to honesty, fairness, professional and politically neutral government administration.

COMPENSATION

The base salary range for this position is $129,000 – $155,000, depending on qualifications.

SELECTION PROCESS
