Location: Village Hall, 1225 Cedar Ln., Northbrook, IL 60062
The Building Inspector conducts field inspections, ensures compliance with local and state building codes, issues violation notices, and assists with plan reviews for construction projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Field Inspections– Conduct inspections of work in progress or completed projects under approved building permits to ensure compliance with building codes and regulations.
- Consultation & Coordination– Provide expert guidance to architects, engineers, specialty contractors, and homeowners, addressing issues and ensuring projects meet required standards.
- Inspection Records– Accurately document inspection findings, maintain detailed inspection logs, and track project progress for compliance.
- Plan Review– Assist with reviewing construction plans, including single-family homes and minor commercial, industrial, and office building additions, ensuring they meet code requirements.
- Collaboration with Other Departments– Work alongside the Village Engineer and Fire Department to enforce their respective codes and regulations, especially during natural disasters.
- Code Compliance– Ensure construction projects conform to local and state building codes, ensuring safety and legal standards are met.
- Violation Notices– Identify non-compliance issues and issue violation notices, ensuring timely resolution and code adherence.
- Disaster Response– Participate in the enforcement of building and safety codes during natural disasters, ensuring compliance in emergency situations.
Must haves for the ideal candidate include:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid Illinois Driver’s License
- Five (5) years of equivalent experience in the building trades
- International Code Council (ICC) Certifications in residential and commercial Building Inspection and Mechanical Inspection.
- Thorough knowledge of local building codes and regulations.
- Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings, site plans and use a computer with working knowledge of Microsoft Office and other applications.
- Meeting deadlines, multitasking and establishing/maintaining effective working relationships with contractors, the general public, and other team members.
