The Village of Orland Park is looking for a dedicated and experienced full-time Accountant who, under general direction, can perform work of considerable difficulty in assisting the Assistant Finance Director and Finance Director with analysis of the Village’s financial functions.
This position involves applying accounting principles to prepare, analyze, and perform a range of financial, technical, and administrative tasks. The listed duties are a general overview and may not cover all responsibilities. Consistent attendance is required.
Key Responsibilities
This important role aids the Finance Director and Assistant Finance Director with various projects while applying principles of accounting in order to prepare and analyze financial information. Duties are focused on performing a variety of standard and complex technical accounting, finance and administrative assignment to include assisting with the preparation of budget reports and associated documentation; preparing timely, accurate, and comprehensive monthly and quarterly financial reports for various departments (e.g., special events, Veteran’s Commission, road projects); serving as a key contact for annual audits; collaborating with auditors to compile and provide necessary financial data; performing internal audits across the organization; ensuring compliance with financial policies and identifying areas for improvement; and contributing to the creation and updating of financial policies and procedures.
Additional responsibilities include preparing and reconciling bank and credit card accounts monthly, ensuring accurate records; executing banking tasks such as positive pay, stop payments, and ACH transactions; processing journal entries for various financial transactions, ensuring they align with the general ledger; administering the purchasing card program, including issuing cards, modifying credit limits, and performing monthly reconciliations; safeguarding the integrity of the financial reporting process by maintaining accurate and up-to-date financial statements; regularly analyzing general ledger accounts, preparing related reports, and adjusting entries as required; and providing backup support to other finance team members as needed, ensuring continuity in finance operations.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance. CPA designation is preferred. Two – five years of related financial accounting experience is also required, experience in municipal finance/accounting is strongly preferred. The ideal candidate will have experience with enterprise financial management systems and have advanced level Microsoft Excel skills. Strong analytical abilities are required. Ability to maintain confidential information and work as a team is required. Strong organizational skills, the ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines is also required. We seek a candidate that has high standards of performance, productivity and initiative, and that consistently embraces the philosophy of continuous improvement. The ideal candidate must have well developed interpersonal and oral/written communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex numerical data effectively in clear graphic formats to ensure understanding by a non-technical audience.
Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) is needed. Strong organizational and analytical skills are essential, along with the ability to calculate basic and complex figures, apply mathematical concepts, and maintain confidentiality. The role requires the ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and work well in a team.
Compensation & Benefits
The Village of Orland Park offers a market competitive total rewards package that includes a base salary range between $62,468.36 and $89,187.49 depending on experience and qualifications.
